Frequently Asked Questions
-
What should my child bring?Along with their ski/snowboard equipment that will be dropped off by parents in the morning, please make sure your child has a snack and water for the bus ride. Secondly, students should bring clothing appropriate for skiing/board in snow. Check the night before for predicted temperature and precipitation for 5pm-9pm in Carroll Valley, PA. A snow sport helmet, layered clothing, water resistant pants, water-resistant winter coat, water-resistant winter coat, water-resistant winter gloves/mittens, socks, and snow sport goggles are recommended for all skiers and boarders. Additionally, please keep in mind that students will have to bring all of their personal belongings with them on the bus, including backpacks and instruments. There is no storage for personal items at NBMS.
-
What can the students leave on the bus while skiing? The buses will be locked and inaccessible for the duration of the evening while at Liberty. They can leave their backpacks and school gear on the buses while out on the mountain.
-
How is ski/snowboard storage handled at NBMS?Ski Club uses storage pods in the school's lower parking lot to store your student’s equipment. Parents may drop drop-off equipment from 7:30 AM to 8:20 AM on ski trip days. Volunteers will direct you to enter the parking lot and the equipment will be removed from your car. You may drop one bag of ski clothing/helmet and one set of skis/poles or snowboard, and one pair of boots to the storage area. We strongly recommend your skis and poles be dropped in a ski bag (ideal) or by a ski/pole carrier strap (less ideal). The storage pods will be locked during the school day. All items must be tagged with the participant’s name, home or cell phone number. Morning volunteers will tag your bag to designate the bus your student will be riding. All items will be removed from the pod and placed in bus-specific piles by chaperones before students are dismissed at 3:00 p.m. Students are solely responsible for moving their bag and gear onto the bus before boarding. Any leftover items will be placed in the storage pod, and accessible again during the next trip. Unfortunately, we can’t open the storage pods at any other time. Neither NB Ski Club nor NBMS are responsible for lost or stolen items. At the end of the evening buses will unload in the NBMS Bus Lanes and students will take all gear home.
-
Will sweatshirts be available to students, as in past years?Yes, information sent as part of the ski club registration includes an option to purchase a sweatshirt for $25. It will be available in youth and adult sizes. All students who ordered sweatshirts can expect to receive them when arriving back to NBMS after the first day of Ski Club on January 10th.
-
How will we be notified if there are cancellations?Join the WhatsApp group to receive information from us on each ski day. We'll post updates on bus arrivals times along with potential cancellations.
-
Can my child sit with their friend on the bus?Yes! The registration form will include a spot for you to include a friend's name.
-
What is the cell phone policy? We encourage the kids to bring a phone or device in order to remain in contact with friends or parents.
-
Can I drive my kid home from Liberty so that they don't have to ride the bus?Yes, but they need to provide a note from you that they can give to one of their bus chaperones when they depart NBMS.
-
When will I be notified about volunteering? Our volunteer coordinators sent emails to all parents and caregivers who expressed an interest in volunteering. Should we require additional volunteers, we'll post a new message to the Google Group.
-
Why do I keep seeing information about Vail Resorts? I thought this was about Liberty Mountain.Vail Resorts is a large corporation that owns several ski resorts in North America and elsewhere. In our geographic vicinity, they own Whitetail, Roundtop, Seven Springs, and of course Liberty Mountain. While it's still possible to buy an old school lift ticket at the Liberty ticket window, doing so is very expensive. Anyone with the ability to purchase in advance should consider an Epic Pass, available from epicpass.com. Many variations of the Epic Pass are available online. At a minimum, your student will need either a Slopes Day package, which includes a 5-day Epic Pass, or some sort of Epic Pass purchased separately online.
-
Do I need an Epic Pass if I'm buying the Slope Days package? No, the Slope Days package includes lessons, rentals, and an Epic Pass good for all five of our visits to Liberty Mountain.
-
What is a Mobile Pass?In recent years, all Vail Resorts locations, including Liberty Mountain, have been strongly suggesting use of their Epic mobile app to effectively replace the plastic card needed to access the lifts. The lift ticket operators can "scan" your phone to check for a valid pass if the phone is on and the app is open. (Having the phone locked is ok). It's a good idea to also have a physical card given the reality of phone batteries going dead or students forgetting to turn on their app.
-
When will my student get their Slope Days pass?Passes will be distributed to the students on the buses on the first day of ski club.
-
When is the last day to join the ski club and purchase the lift tickets?Registration for the 2024-2025 season has ended. Similarly, the last day to purchase an epic pass or Slope Days package ended on December 2nd 2024.
-
What does the $200 registration fee cover?Largely, our expenses cover the cost of the buses, the transportation to bring the kids to Liberty. The buses are very comfortable and well-equipped with bathrooms in the back. Other costs include the cost of renting PODs to store the skis and snowboards at NBMS, for example.
-
Do the students need to bring money?Liberty is now a cashless resort. Instead of bringing money, they can purchase food in the lodge using Apple Pay, Google Pay, or using the Resort Charge attached to their Epic Pass. (Resort Charge is what they call the program that allows you to add your credit card to an Epic Pass)
-
Are there refunds? While we cannot control the costs of the lesson, rentals, or lift tickets offered through Liberty Mountain Resort, we strive to be as flexible as possible if a child is unable to take part before the season begins. If that happens, please contact us directly.
-
How do I get a discounted pass, lessons, or rentals?Follow the link above to read about the pricing in the Slope Days program.
-
How do you keep track of all the kids on the mountain? We don't. The kids are on their own on the mountain, but if needed, there are several Ski Club volunteers in the lodge and skiing out on the mountain in royal blue, unattractive ski jackets readily visible at all times.
-
What happens if my child gets injured? The ski patrols at Liberty mountain are available to assist and provide basic medical care to those with injuries while on the mountain. They have our information and we have yours. Parents are the first to be alerted of an injury. To help avoid these scenarios, please consider having your child take a 1-hour lesson while at the resort. The instructors teach mountain safety as well as technique.
-
What if my child does not know how to ski or snowboard? We VERY highly recommend taking advantage of the lessons offered at Liberty. The popular Slope Days program (see link above for more info) has good pricing and kids often enjoy taking lessons with their friends.
-
What time do the kids leave school and arrive back at NBMS?Please see the complete itinerary using the link above, "Fridays", that includes this information and more.
-
Does the ski club consider other days, such as Saturdays or holidays? The NB Ski Club trips to Liberty are scheduled in advance and in coordination with the staff at the mountain to make sure there is sufficient capacity to handle the numerous groups such as ours. Keeping the schedule to Fridays-only ensures consistency week-after-week and assists with planning.
